Is it safe to visit Naxos alone?

As a general rule, it is neither safe nor easy for most people to travel alone. It just doesn’t feel safe enough, especially the first time. Have you ever thought about it? First of all you will have to deal with a bunch of negative comments that your friends and relatives will bombard you with every single day, hoping they will, eventually, change your mind and alter your travel plans. They mean well. But Naxos is far from the deepest darkest jungle.

Wherever we go, even in our home town, when we are alone we need to be more careful and, although we hardly ever do so, it is comforting to plan ahead in case something goes wrong. It is good practice to tell a friend or relative where we are going and roughly when we plan to return. Another good safety practice is to keep our mobile phone on and charged to keep fairly regular contact with at least one other person, informing them of our immediate plans. all this may sound like a bother, but it never seems more relevant in our hour of need.

So, having said all this, the question that remains to be answered is: “If my destination is Naxos Greece, will I be ok if I am alone?” Definitely YES!!!

Our safety mostly depends on us. Taking some necessary precautions will allow us to enjoy our Naxos holidays to the maximum and be completely out of danger. Practicing prudent safety measures is something that everyone should do anywhere in the world and although Greece is still considered a safe country to visit, common sense must be exercised. Here are some additional tips to help us:

Tip 1 - Never, ever, ever, under no circumstances should we drive when drunk. It doesn’t matter how good we are behind the wheel. Many people, especially the younger adults who tend to let their inhibitions go when holidaying, do drive drunk during summer in the Greek islands or anywhere else for that matter. Naxos is no exception to that. We need our full senses to keep safe.

Tip 2 - Do not take risks. There is really no reason to expose yourself to the dangers of rock climbing, scuba diving and other similar activities if inexpert or alone even if expert, when we are on Naxos or anywhere else on planet Earth. This is basic common sense.

Tip 3 - If partying is your “thing” be careful to watch your glass and get your own drink. This applies anywhere in the world. Special care must be taken when you are alone and when partying in unknown company, level headedness is always a prime concern when alcohol is being consumed.

Tip 4 - Do not keep too much cash with you, decide what you are prepared to spend for the day or evening and keep the rest with other precious belongings to a reliable person.

Tip 5 - Keep good contact with the right people. We can do this throughout the trip. We continue to keep out friends or family up to speed with our plans and while enjoying our stay, wherever we are, we can choose to associate with decent people who will not only keep us good company but also know where we are at most times.

If we use these few basic rules, then we can safely travel anywhere in the world, worry-free. Naxos is among the safest places to be and the Naxians are really friendly and easy going people and they will go out of their way to help, if need be.
Travelling is food for the mind; it is a great experience not to be missed. It is a pity to cancel your travel plans just because no one else can be with you.
